Co-Owner Waldorf Essentials
Who am I? Well... let's see if I can condense it into a paragraph. I am a mom in my 40s with five children. My big kids are now adults and I have three left at home. I've been studying Steiner and Waldorf education deeply for over 15 years. I've been a wife, an ex-wife and a wife again. I am a stroke survivor. Two out of five children have spectrum struggles. My oldest has ASD (autism spectrum disorder) and my youngest has SPD (sensory processing disorder.) There is NEVER a dull moment in the Nielsen house.
About 12 years ago I took my study of Steiner and put it to work with other families in our series of curriculum"A Journey through Waldorf Homeschooling" and our business has grown from there.
I love my life. In 2014 we took a leap of faith and moved our family to the California coast. We live three blocks from the beach and many days you will find us there, catching hermit crabs in the tide pools, running our toes through warm sand, or enjoying the waves. I love to knit and embroider. I might kick your butt at a game of Uno or Candyland - you pick - and I really enjoy a quiet afternoon with my family.
Co-Owner Waldorf Essentials
I've worn many hats in my life but these days I probably wear more than ever. They can be stacked so high I need to duck when I enter rooms, and I'm only 5'6. Right now, I'm a husband, father, entrepreneur, videographer and content creator, editor, teacher, San Diegian and OBecian (a term used to refer to residents of Ocean Beach in San Diego.) Over the years I've been a journalist and filmmaker. Melisa and I decided to take a leap of faith years ago when I quit my newspaper job to pursue building Waldorf Essentials. Its a decision we've never regretted. We are constantly bolstered by the kind words of clients whom we have helped over the years.

Hi! (waving frantically) Hmmmm, Let me see if I can condense my life into a short bio! After a short practice marriage to my high school boyfriend, I am now married to my best friend. Together we have raised 4 kids to adulthood, and are still working on raising the next 4. I am also a new grandma to the best little girl! In high school they had me take a test to see what carrier I should have. My 3 top results were teacher, social worker, and nurse. Interestingly I do all three of those in some capacity at home! In my house we have ADHD, ASD (hubby and kids), Epilepsy , and since we were blessed with 2 of our children through foster care, we also work on healing early childhood trauma, reactive attachment disorder, and FASD (fetal alcohol) After struggling to get my oldest child the help she needed in the public school system, we decided to try homeschooling. That was 21 years ago! In those years we have tried about every homeschool method out there. We were radical unschoolers for years, until we found Waldorf education about 12 years ago. It has been life changing, and I cannot imagine what life would be like for my children, or myself without it! I grew up in the bay area of California, hubby grew up in Arizona, and now we live next to the beautiful mountains of Utah. Winter finds us out snowboarding and sledding, Summer finds us at the pool or every splash pad in town. Fall & Spring are for hiking here! I love to travel, and are currently working on doing a lot of that to fulfill our family theme for the year, which is ADVENTURE!
